Water is a cheap, efficient and abundant solvent, which is used as a cleaning, washing and waste transportation agent in many processes. During the processes various substances are dissolved or suspended in the water and after the process, the water is either cleaned and recycled, or disposed with all its contents into the environment - eventually after a number of treatment steps. The water and the remaining dissolved and suspended substances are mostly emitted through pipelines into waterways such as channels, rivers, lakes, seas or oceans. Substances that find their way into the water environment can cause the ecological balance in the waters to change and this may affect the ability of plants and animals to live there and may also cause impact to human health and food supply. |
