Extraction of Bauxite

Click here to return to the Life Cycle home pageBauxite is an abundant natural mineral which contains aluminum. The aluminum is found primarily as aluminum oxide (Al2O3) in bauxite and one ton of bauxite contains around 250 kg pure aluminum, depending on the quality of the ore. During mining, electricity and diesel are used to run drilling and transportation equipment. Bauxite mining may lead to severe destruction of natural landscapes unless precautions are followed.
