Extraction of Coal

Click here to return to the Life Cycle home pageCoal is an abundant fossil fuel that has been formed from the decay of peat over hundreds of millions of years. Coal can be found in different qualities. The lowest grade is lignite and the highest grade is hard coal (anthracite). Coal can be extracted from an open mine or from underground mines. Exchanges associated with coal mining vary from mine to mine depending on natural conditions, extraction technology, equipment used as well as operational practices. Open mining of coal may lead to severe destruction of natural landscapes unless precautions are followed.
