Production of Aluminum

Click here to return to the Life Cycle home pageAluminum metal is produced in a two-step procedure. First, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is extracted from bauxite by a chemical process. Second, the aluminum oxide is dissolved in a molten electrolyte where the metallic aluminum is recovered by electrolysis. The electrolysis process is very electricity demanding.
