Production of Polyethylene (PE)

Click here to return to the Life Cycle home pagePolyethylene is produced by polymerization of ethylene (gas) under increased temperature and pressure conditions. The process requires energy and unpolymerized ethylene is emitted during the processes. The output of the process is polyethylene granulate, which is used as a raw material in the manufacturing of polyethylene products. Ethylene is produced from oil or natural gas feed stocks. Additives such as colorants and and plasticizers may be added to obtain desired properties for the end product.
