Refining of Oil

Click here to return to the Life Cycle home pageIn the oil refining process, crude oil is converted into a number of different products, such as fuel oil, diesel oil, gasoline and organic-based chemicals during a complex series of cracking, distillation, cleaning and mixing steps. The process requires energy and a number of additives. During the process volatile organic compounds from the fuel evaporate into the atmosphere. Exchanges associated with oil refining vary from refinery to refinery depending on end-product, refining technology, equipment used as well as operational practices.
